In my two weeks of working the
project, I’ve focused on taking pictures and considering the media I want to
work in. I’ve also considered not
working primarily in a dining room setting, but expanding it more into other
facets of the American home to get a better perspective. I’m hoping my concept grows as I work more on
the project, and branch out into the unknown.
I took pictures of the empty studio
to begin, thinking I could alter the images into my “ideal home” as a child and
adult because this felt unauthentic to me, I have stopped developing this idea. But I still have the imagery for any future
ideas.
Right now I have many ideas I would
like to explore. Taking digital
photographs of a dining, living, or even bath room and placing it out of its
normal setting. But I’m still milling
this through, thinking to myself, “what could this be saying and how would this
drive my idea forward?” Another idea I’ve
considered is using film taking pictures of the home, like peoples’ dining room
tables or even bedrooms and kitchens. I
think this would feel more truthful done in a film format, but I may also shoot
in digital to compare and contrast while I work.
Currently, I am working on a
drawing that was appropriated from the images I took of the studio. I projected the picture of the kitchen and
drew the outline. I’m having untrained
people drawing varying concepts of the home on my piece. Most people have drawn the happy-go-lucky,
ideal home, which I find interesting because it shows how people don’t really
want to discuss the different issues that can and do occur in homes. I’ve considered after this piece, moving to a
larger scale, making it feel like a space one could almost walk into. This makes me anxious because I’ve never worked
in a large format before.
