Emily Rupe Post 1

This past week I started to get comfortable with studio lighting, since I have never used it before. While experimenting, I've also been collecting people's possessions and backdrops that might pair well with them.  So far I have some fabric and mirror foil. I've been recording exposures of peoples objects to have a general sense of what times and ISOs will work inside the downtown studio at different times of the day.  Shutter speeds are extremely fast because the objects are being shot while they are in mid-air.

I've been asking almost everyone I'm in contact with to consider lending me some of their favorite possessions to shoot, so if anyone is interested in helping me out, feel free to bring some of your stuff to the studio!

I've gathered lot of reference pictures to start working on the sculpture part of my project.  I'm definitely going to keep looking for more and better reference pictures because the ones I have right now are fine to start, but they probably aren't going to be able to get me all the way through.

I made the armatures for both foals.  I measured them out so I'm hoping I won't have to cut them up and make too many drastic changes as I go.  Though I kinda like destroying stuff and it would fun to have a good reason to do it in the name of  improving my work.

I also started some of the basic sculpting.  Right now I'm just trying to rough out all the basic shapes and stuff.  I'm hoping to start doing the muscles soon after I fill them out a bit more.

I've interviewed several individuals (mainly artists) from Williamsport and nearby areas. First Friday gave me the opportunity to connect with most of them and learn more about their craft. The owner of Dirty Dogs, Worth Rawson, let me walk through his studio, and we talked for a while about his business and why he settled in Williamsport. He told me about the studio resident he has living in the apartment above, who I want to get in contact with as well.

Worth is also getting me in contact with other people in the area to write their stories. He taught me of a firing technique using a soda kiln. It's a three day firing process where wood needs to be constantly added as well as soda. The chemical reaction gives the glaze a warped and surreal finish to it. Soda kilns cannot be bought but rather made with bricks.

I also met a woman named, Andrea, who makes a living off of her artwork. Her and her roommate live on 4th St. above the law offices.

I've done some research on parallax options and how to have a video playing in the background while the user scrolls through text.

Here is a few photos of what I decided to start with. I am continuing my idea of piecing ceramic tiles together in a quilt like pattern. The tiles will come together as one with an image of an ink blot of Abraham Lincoln and JFK. I choose the two because they are defining men of our past. Below are a few ink blots I created simply by using a cell phone app and found images. I am currently tracing an image of Lincoln and creating the patterns.
I've talked to Kathy Sterngold and she is ordering me under glaze for the project and different clay than what the art department has.  I initially wanted to make my own glazes, and I have not ruled the idea out. But I have changed the type of glaze I would be using.
I thought about how I would present these two ceramic pieces and I came up with an idea of mounting them on wood. But, I am still toying around with presentation.
I like to work on many projects at once so I will start coming up with concepts for a few paintings. I want to steer away from presidents and start thinking about other types of men from our past perhaps cow boys, astronauts,  and open to any other ideas.

Arissa Dickison post two. 9.03.15

For the past three days I have been playing around with different brush strokes for the smoke and how it is positioned and opacity. I am not really sure where I am going with the smoke look right now. I am still trying to take photographs of real smoke then put them in instead of the brushes I downloaded for photoshop.  I am still continuing with more photographs with the smoke.

I am also taking more shoots of different models. I just haven't added the smoke to their images yet.

Arissa Dickison post 1

8.27 & 8.29
I drew sketches of positions of models and how i want cloth placed for when I took pictures on Monday.

*Please do not talk about the model or confront them*
Today on 8.31.15 I took over 60 photographs of two different models and edited them till 11PM.  I am still working on the other ones with smoke, this picture is not done but this is how far I have gotten tonight with the first try.

Elizabeth Hughes Post 1

I've got several things done and started so far. The sewing is almost done, I just have the third jelek (vest) to finish up and then I can start planning and working on the embroidery and applique (I'll be running Joann's at some point this week). Here are some of the jeleks as well as a glimpse at the cutting and sewing in process.

I've also been planning out my prints so I can start the etchings and reliefs as soon as my materials get in. Things might shift or move in the process, but at least there's a start.

I've also been toying with the idea of printing inside the jeleks on a separate appliqued piece. I'd be depicting the three big political players during the war: Izetbegovic, Milosevic, and Tudjman and each of their portraits would be in TV screens. The TV will be a separate block print and three depictions will also be separate which will be a quicker and more efficient printing method for me. And all these blocks will be on linoleum, like the main prints.

For your convenience I'll show you my reference pictures for this since I haven't got the sketches really done for this.

Alija Izetbegovic: Political leader before and during the war, representing the Muslim citizens of Bosnia- Herzegovina.

Slobodan Milosevic: President of Serbia

Franjo Tudjman: President of Croatia
