Lindsay Myers - 4th Post

I don't know if this is early or late because I'm having a lot of trouble remembering when we're supposed to submit these.  Anyway, we had a bunch of crits lately and I did not care for many of them.  No offense to the crititiquers.  That one dude from the other college made several good points which I suppose I should consider seeing as I still need and idea for my body of work (can I call it that if it's only 1 piece?) so that I can write that artist statement thingy.  But I haven't got any of the kind of feedback I've really wanted so I finally decided to e-mail a professional equine sculptor for a critique.  Luckily she agreed to do it and I found it immensely helpful.  Here are some of the many pics I sent her.

She said it was a good start but there were a few tweaks to be made, the most obvious being that the hindquarters of my sculpture were square rather than trapezoidal. It took a bit of work, but I fixed them and several other things and I'm much happier now.  (Below is the picture before the change)

I'm working on the joints now in addition to the inner legs.  I'm struggling a bit as it's difficult to find good references, but I'm sure I'll get through it.  I have another critique scheduled in a month or two, once I am nearly finished.  I couldn't be more excited or grateful for the help.

Oh, and I went and tried to take reference pictures of the babies, but they're pretty fuzzy so I'm not sure how helpful they'll be.  Plus they're really old compared to what I'm going for, but they're still super cute.  So definitely not a waste of time.

(Sorry for the poor quality of the pictures, I just took them with my phone really quickly)

Here are just a few of my pictures in the process of editing. After the critique I was really overwhelmed about what everyone said. I tried to regain what I'm trying to say and I figured the camera angle could say a lot. Most of these I haven't adjusted at all yet, I'm trying to show you the before and after pictures so you can understand my process hopefully more easily. I will post the edited versions probably for the next post.

Cathrin - Above pictures

So last week I tried something very different from what I had been doing and I took images from above the water. And this is what I got...

I kinda took a week off to reevaluate my life after all these critiques because I just got lost in what I was doing. As I was going along I forgot my main concept and just started taking pictures so there was confusion within my work.

So I started writing a lot and focusing on what I want to portray. I have started coming up with a few scenes that show different struggles that I really want to focus on.

Maybe this will continue to look murder-like and dark, I'm not really sure at this point but I'm open to change.

Elizabeth Hughes Post 4

So, I've started fresh with a new concept and project. When I started this on Tuesday, I didn't really know where it was going to go. All I knew was that I wanted to start drawing and just keep adding surfaces until a concept emerged (almost like automatic drawing). So, I did this and a concept did come to me! In the other body of work I've been doing this semester, I'd been working with emotional struggles and in many cases, it arises from the stress of separation. It makes me angry, frustrated, sad, etc.., but in any case, I wanted to look at the reason I get those feelings. Why am I feeling sad? What am I separated from? And a lot of it is because I really miss the one place I've ever felt at home. So, there's all these memories that are constantly coming into my head in little pieces and I began to draw them.

In a way, the new project is a record of my memories and a journal of the feelings I have when I remember them. It gives this project a lot of freedom because it grows every day as I draw whatever comes to my head.

I guess the concept could be seen as my struggle with living in pieces, with living in memories, and dealing with the emotional aftermath. I'm sure in a week, things will get more coherent and formed, but I'm happy with where I am right now. So, here's the visual work so far:

It's growing fast, so I'm not sure how presentation will work, but I don't want to think about that yet.

Rupe #3

I'm still working on collecting lots and lots of unique images of peoples skin. At first I was worried about the inconsistency of the light being an issue, but as I'm moving forward with my grids I'm finding that the differences in shades and hues make them a lot more dynamic.

I'm also working on printing my second hand, and keeping my fingers crossed that my screens cooperate with me this time around.

Just to clear everything up - I will be collaging my pieces once I am done with the printmaking and contact printing processes. The collaged images will be the same subject matter - hands, skin, eyes, mouths, teeth, etc. My work has always primarily focused on my fascination with the senses and the range of feelings that they can bring, and I'm hoping to translate that through my work.

Hayden, Post 3

I originally was planning on having the family portraits I created on Photoshop to be displayed in vintage picture frames I would have found at antique shops.  But I had the idea to incorporate them into my installation piece.  I want to have a couch when I'm done with it, and I had the idea to take my pieces I made and turn them into decorative pillows for the couch.

I looked up ways on how to take an image and transfer it to fabric.  I used gel matte and scrap fabric I had and I tried it twice.  Once with the gel matte only on the paper, and another time with it on the fabric and paper.  The second worked better.

I bought white fabric and transfer the images, through the transfer some on the image came off but I like it.  It feels more like a vintage flair and distressed, more worn.  I'm considering tea staining the pillows.  But I like how they've turned out.  I'm waiting to get stuffing for the pillows.

I've started creating part of my grandparents kitchen.  I've done counters and cupboards so far.  It was extremely hard because the paint was not sticking or moving well on the wallpaper.  I'm going to be making a refridgerator next for this and add other items to it but I'm not sure what yet.  I'm pinning each piece to the background so it doesn't destroy the work I've done.  It looks a lot different hung up in comparison to the floor.
After this piece is done I will make on that will be the other side of the wall but I don't know if I want to continue with the kitchen or do a different room.

Over long weekend I plan to do a lot of work.  I have homes I plan on going in to take pictures of their dinning room tables and kitchen tables.  I also will be getting an old tv if it is still in my basement to use for a video I am planning on making.

Here are the painted hooves, they need to be shaved on the end in some places and another coat of paint needs to be added. The orange is the inner part of the leg where the yellow and green are the outer leg. I also have a fish bone spine I will be using for teeth and/or claws. They are very fragile and sharp I am quickly learning...ouchh!
My snake is coming alone it took me about 3 work sessions to finish it, it is completed now but missing its three heads and a tail.Which I am working on with my other materials collected. It is made out of wire coat hangers wrapped in aluminum foil to give it the coiled shape I wanted. Next I wrapped the shape with news paper to give it more of a thicker body to resemble the body of a lengthly boa constrictor. Once i used about a stack of news paper it was time to plaster! Plastering is something I have done for the first time this year and I enjoy working with it. I like the quick results and the pace you have to work.

I am currently working on a marine insect with crab like features and bird heads to add onto of  the coiled boa. Next blog you will have a idea of what I'm working with.

Why didn't the chicken cross the road? BECAUSE I TOOK ITS BONES
!!! I have been living off of chicken wings the past weekend.  I boiled the bones to remove any extra meat and left them to dry out.

After My bones dried i drilled holes in them. Doing this will help me when i want to attach them to a piece I am making. I also painted the thicker bones to resemble a horses hooves or cow hooves.
Im sorry i haven't posted too much lately I'm trying to get all of my ducks in a row. After this long weekend coming up i will be on a regular pace with my work.

Arissa Dickison post 10.11.15

For the last two/three weeks I been working with nude models and having them painted with all different colors. I still want to incorporate the smoke within the images.I been adding smoke and changing the color of the smoke to the colors painted onto the models to blend better. I may get rid of all the smoke in the images, I want to have feed back because I feel the images are stronger with out the smoke. But i am still trying to get a to a good point with the smoke making the images stronger.

Lindsay Myers - 3rd Post

I've still been focusing mostly on the body and legs.  I'm not crazy about the front shoulders, but I think I'll keep working on the legs and stuff before I get a second opinion and start messing with them.  Overall, I'm still pretty happy about how it's going.

I started working on the lower legs.  Had to redo them so I lost an entire session worth of work to bad sculpting.  However, I'm reasonably happy with them now.  I was pretty thrilled, but when I was out visiting the babies I stared at Quince's legs and realized there are a lot more visible tendons than I put in.  Thankfully my basic shapes seem OK, so I should be able to just tweak and add later.  I wasn't planning on using pics of the babies as reference, because they're a bit too old, but I'm rethinking and I believe I will for finicky stuff like this before they get too fuzzy.

Below is as it stands right now.  Still need to finish up upper forelegs and the insides of the legs as well as the joints and chest before I'll be able to get an opinion on the body and move on to the head and neck.

Also, I now have a light so that's pretty cool.

Cathrin - Lightroom Editing

After my failed first fail of a photoshoot, I finally figured out what the heck I was doing. I started using clothing and decided it did not move the way I wanted it to. So I just wrapped some fabric around her and I loved the look.

I edited a few images with Lightroom to start and now I will be moving to photoshop. I am unsure how I want to incorporate the barbie/real life objects to show the triggers yet. I am guess that will come with my photoshop editing.

Here are a few photographs that I am currently working with...

tried to incorporate the objects in this one...

Bryan McGinnis post 3

 Howdy ya'll,

In the past two weeks I have stretched two canvas'. I cut all of my pieces up for my ceramic piece both paper and in wood so I had a template to work with. I did some outlining of my Amelia painting. I made two more designs for my paintings! The designs are of Abrahams father and Amelia's dad. They are super complex compared to the painting I already started but I'm way too excited to start them. Today I started adding the textures to the two canvi and stuck my hands into some clay! The circle painting is just an under layer not a lyco themed painting!!!!
God is love,
Rev Run
