Nam's final blog post

I'm rather amazed by how drastically my ideas have transformed throughout the semester, as they are now mostly solidified.

Here's to the original braille sign piece, also the inspiration for my braille sign series:

("The last braille sign you'll ever see" / "Now blind people can see with their ears")

Along with that, the high voltage piece also made the cut:

 ("Caution: High voltage" / "Your ears can now look out for you when your eyes can't")

I'm also working on three other pieces, one better than the other. The first is a pop-up braille map/sign that parallels WalkNYC (a pedestrian map found across NYC that is unfortunately inaccessible). The point I'm trying to get across is that Google Lookout enables people with visual loss to better navigate and "undertake" adventures. My current heading is "anyone may lead the way," which to some might seem unclear, thus I'm looking for a way to refine it as well as the body copy.

A second piece plays on the idea of people bumping into sandwich ad boards on the sidewalks (also known as A-frames). This is a hassle and can pose as tripping hazard for blind people, yet at the same time is an untapped opportunity of reaching blind audience. The current message is rather silly/trivial, as compared to the compelling danger/excitement of the preceding pieces, so I really need to come up with a new idea for this execution. Otherwise, I would have to dump the sandwich.

Text says: Finally, a sandwich board the blind folks can read.

But here's a better solution:

Google Lookout, the talking eye app for the blind

an app that keeps you from bumping into roadblocks like this,

and, better yet, tells you what's for lunch special today.

Then here's an idea that just popped into my head recently. Has lots of potential, I just need to do some refinement.

I'm also working on my copy, particularly trying to solidify a tag line ("Google Lookout, abcxyz") and make the body copy consistent across the ads. With that said, I feel good about finishing this series and adding it to my portfolio in the near future.

I could cry. Everything is together and things are actually working! The flower is finally done (not sure why it took me so long to finish it...) Thank you Seth for your help!!

Things have started to slow down a little. On the bright side, my ink pieces are almost complete! I just need to finish mounting the last one.

My digital pieces are coming along slowly, but I feel confident that they'll be near completion fairly soon.

My work is an exploration of the human experience, creating commentary on issues pertaining to social justice, military, feminity, and religion. As I have developed as an artist I found it challenging to only put myself into a single category or box when it comes to creating work. I never have a solid focus on any single message or idea I want to convey; but rather, think, talk, and act on the issues of the world around me as they occur. My work and ideas constantly evolve depending on what is happening in the moment. I am thinking of creating an installation or interactive work that I will elaborate on later. Sculptures will build off of ideas I created previously. Currently my work includes painting, gif (which I want to create as its own series), and digital posters.
