Carissa Guthrie #1

This post includes my progress as of today. I have recently ordered three large canvases and some more oil paints from dickblick.com, applied gesso to four of the canvases I already have, and began working on one of my not self-portrait paintings. Today I started with a sketch and used cool tones to work on an undercoat of paint for this piece. I'm not very happy with it at the moment but I can see where the problems are and should be able to fix them. Currently, the entire image is off which is frustrating and I hate it but, I am hopeful I can make this work!  

 

 

 

Sophie Herzing #1

Soooooooo things took a little turn from the original presentation of my idea for my senior thesis project. I'm still working with memory and things that have really stuck out to me or have blurred in my mind. For instance, I clearly remember some things where as photographs have to remind me of a lot of things I'm jumping over. I tried out some watercoloring on the first day, but I found it to be a little too constricting for the time being. Seth suggested I try to paint big (which I love) so we hung up this linen and I just went for it.

These pictures are from that experimentation with oil and painting on a larger scale. Same concept, just different medium. I'm in love with painting this big. Absolutely OBSESSED with it. You can see my progression from the first couple days into the latest with these pictures. I can't wait till this all totall dries so I can go in with some glazing and drybrushing to really add some depth here. Will this be what I use for the juror? I'm not sure. Will I go back to the watercolors? I'm not sure. But for now, I'm loving this. Can't wait to get back into the studio. - Soph

Joseph Troxler

     The first couple of weeks beginning work on my senior thesis work has been very productive. So far I have built the majority of the structures for four pieces. With this being the foundation of my work, with small sculptural tweaks here and there, i'm feeling confident in what i'm creating. This visual language that is being created out of many personal fears is becoming more cohesive. I feel that because I have been searching close memories related to creating the sculptures, the work is taking a life of it's own.
          I have fond memories of working in a wood shop with my grandfather when I was young. He taught me about all the different tools and how to use them. Respect was always at the forefront of every lesson in the wood shop: respect the tools you use, respect who you're working with, and most of all respect the creation. These lessons have formed my work in this series in a way I did not initially intend. What began as a project grounded and based in fear has become an opportunity to look back in my own life and rediscover what made me. What caused me to get to where I am, and where did these fears begin taking root? I'm constantly pondering these questions while I work. Each post during this year I will give updates on my work, as well as what i'm feeling during the working process. Until next time,

Cathrin - Final Post :(

Here are the pictures I showed at the final critique. 

Since all my finals are over now and I have free time (YAY) I'm going to mess with the opacity and see if I can find a happy medium between Barbie and human skin!

(This one is no where close to done... just wanted to show I was working on it!)

I'm going to post something else with all my fails over the semester because I was looking back and they are funny to see how far I have come.
